Summer Reading Programs
Haycock Rising K - 6th Grades
As Nancie Atwell (winner of the $1 million teaching prize) states, “the most important predictor of academic success is the amount of time children spend reading books, more important than economic or social status. And one of the few predictors of high achievement in math and science is the amount of time children devote to pleasure reading.” We are excited about Haycock’s reading choice boards for this summer, and attach them here. (The COUGAR board is for rising fourth, fifth and sixth graders. The PAWS board is for rising first, second and third graders, and the READ board is for rising Kindergarteners.) Giving your child choice of books, and helping them find time to read are the factors which will help them engage more. Talk with your child tonight about how you will make time this summer for daily reading. (Do children need …quiet time to read? . . .time free from electronics to concentrate?) We hope all the children will also sign up for the Fairfax County Public Library summer reading program. |
