Art Appreciation
What is Art Appreciation?
PTA’s Art Appreciation program supplements our students’ exposure to art through interactive discussion and projects related to the work of famous artists. Throughout the school year, parent volunteers are asked to coordinate the presentation of 4-5 interactive sessions for their classroom.
Examples of Past Session Outlines:
• O’Keeffe
• Warhol
• Matisse
• Rousseau
What is required of an Art Appreciation volunteer?
• A commitment to spend 1–6 hours per school year in your child’s classroom scheduled at a mutually convenient time for you and your child’s teacher.
• A desire to talk with students and have fun doing a project related to an artist and his/her work.
What’s NOT required of an Art Appreciation volunteer?
• Artistic talent and/or immense creativity
• Background/education in Art History
• A demanding, rigid time commitment.
• A lot of preparatory work
What planners do to make this program fun and easy for volunteers:
• Provide background materials on artists and their work to help guide a 15-20 minute discussion with the class (even an optional script will be provided for those who would find that useful).
• Walk through pre-planned class projects related to a selected artist’s work at a 30-45 minute volunteer prep session.
• Pre-package all required visual aids and activity supplies and load on the “art cart” so all is ready for volunteers to pick-up just before their scheduled session. All volunteers have to do is wheel the cart into the room and present the session within a given six week window!
We want so much for every child to benefit from this enriching program! That can’t happen unless at least one parent volunteers from every classroom. Please consider being an Art Appreciation volunteer to ensure your child will not miss out. Students who have participated in the program love it and volunteers have said it has been “the most rewarding time spent” in their child’s classroom.
