Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement
The Junior Achievement program at Haycock Elementary educates and inspires children in the first through fifth grades to understand and value American’s free enterprise system. The lesson plans are designed to introduce students to important economic concepts that will ultimately enhance their understanding of the world around them.
The JA curriculum provides an educational experience to students that is both unique and exciting, yet fully correlates with the requisite Standards of Learning. Learning about economics - whether it is a concept as simple as “wants and needs” or as complex as “modern international trade” - is a valuable and enriching experience for students.
The JA lessons are taught by Haycock adult volunteers from the surrounding community, including businesspeople, parents, and university students. Our volunteers educate children using both JA’s professionally developed, time-proven curriculum, as well as the volunteer’s own experiences from the professional world.
Throughout all lessons, Junior Achievement promotes seven key ideas. These ideas revolve around business, citizenship, economics, entrepreneurship, ethics, financial literacy, and career development. The seven program themes also teach students that people assume roles as individuals, consumers, and workers in an expanding cultural environment that extends from the self and family to global relations. Students learn the basic concepts of business and economics and how education is relevant to the workplace.
