Cultural Arts
Cultural Arts Program
The Cultural Arts Committee sponsors a series of in-school activities throughout the year designed to expose students to a wide range of educational and artistic experiences. During the 2006-2007 school year, the committee sponsored “The Making of Stranger in the Woods,” an assembly about the making of a movie based on the award-winning book; the Virginia Opera; Deborah Wiles, a prolific Virginia author; the Amadeus Orchestra; and the U.S. Navy band. The previous year, the committee sponsored Dovie Thomason, a Native American storyteller; the Karelian Folk Ensemble, a Russian folk group; How Old is a Hero?, a Smithsonian Discovery Theater play about youth in the civil rights movement; and Mordicai Gerstein, a Caldecott Award winning author and illustrator.
For the upcoming school year, the committee is in the process of planning a series of activities that will be just as enjoyable as previous years. We will be sponsoring an author visit once again. This year, we are thrilled to announce that poet J. Patrick Lewis will be spending the day with us on April 4, 2008. Also, in support of expanding our children’s exposure to science, we are hosting the MD Science Center for “Behind the Scenes” on February 6.
We are looking forward to another exciting year at Haycock! In order to make these activities possible, we need several volunteers who would be able to attend the in-school assemblies and assist the artists with their set-up. This requires a couple of hours on the day of the assembly. Assembly times rotate between morning (9-11ish) and afternoon (1-3ish).
