Cougar Woods
Support Outdoor Learning at Haycock
Cougar Woods is a partnership between the PTA, parent volunteers and teachers that enriches the learning experiences of Haycock students through outdoor learning activities.
Cougar Woods activities serve as enhancements to the normal instructional program. Studies show that such hands-on experiences are very effective at rounding out and consolidating the learning process, while also stimulating curiosity, developing responsibility, and cultivating inquiry skills.
HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?
1. BECOME A COUGAR WOODS CLASSROOM COORDINATOR or VOLUNTEER – Assist your child’s teacher with outdoor learning activities and lesson plans during the school day. Here is a sample of what we have done successfully in the past and can be repeated:
- Regular visits outdoors to observe seasonal changes in the schoolyard
- Plant or tend gardens (organic vegetables in raised beds, butterfly, hummingbird, Native American, etc.)
- Participate in the “Journey North” tulip and hummingbird tracking project
- Bring in speakers (such as raptor rehabilitators & watershed specialists)
- Provide materials for the small world study and building dioramas
- Organize schoolyard surveys, scavenger hunts and team-building activities
- Maintain bird feeders and bird baths
- Provide seeds and supplies to start plants inside
- Purchase bulbs for forcing in the classroom (not everything has to be outdoors!)
- Feed the pond turtle and the worms in the courtyard compost bin
- Provide materials to weave on the outdoor loom
