GLOBAL/FLEX

Global/FLEX Language Classes

The Haycock PTA is expanding the GLOBAL (Global Language Opportunity Benefiting All Learners) program by offering instruction in three languages for the 2011-2012 school year.  Students in all grades (K-6) have the opportunity for weekly language instruction in:

  • Spanish
  • French
  • Chinese

In addition, FLEX (Foreign Language Experience Program) is continuing to offer Hindi courses at the beginner (Level 1) and intermediate (Level 2) levels.

What is GLOBAL?

  • The GLOBAL approach to language learning allows students to develop basic communicative skills in a language while reinforcing and enriching content in other disciplines.
  • Instruction reinforces grade level Standards of Learning (SOL) objectives while teaching a language.
  • Curriculum is aligned with the Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) program that is taught during the school day.
  • Teachers are employed by Fairfax County Public Schools and are trained specifically for the GLOBAL program and FCPS Best Practices in Teaching and Learning.

What is FLEX?

Fairfax County Public Schools continues to offer some language instruction through the FLEX language program.  FLEX emphasizes basic vocabulary and cultural experience through stories, games, activities, and music.
Students enroll based on language experience and ability level (beginner or intermediate).

When are the GLOBAL/FLEX classes?

All GLOBAL and FLEX classes will be taught in the morning from 8-9 am.

  • Students in GLOBAL classes will receive 1 hour per week of language instruction for 25 weeks based on grade level (e.g., grades K-3 or 4-6).
  • Students in the FLEX Hindi classes will receive 1 hour a week for 20 weeks based on language ability level (Level 1 or 2).
  • Parents must provide before school transportation arrangements.  Classes will be confirmed if a minimum of 8 children are enrolled.
