Greetings from the LMS PTA Nominating Committee!
We are currently filling PTA committee chair positions for the 2017-18 school year. We welcome you to get involved! Some committees work throughout the entire year, and others are organized around one main event. Some require you to be at the school and others can be done from home. There are MANY ways to support our community and enhance your child’s experience at Longfellow.

My name is Tatiana Vaz and I am the Executive Director from McLean High School for
the McLean Langley Relay for Life Event. Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event of the American Cancer Society. It is the largest funder of cancer research and support for cancer patients and their families. Groups of students and community members form teams of 10-15 participants that work together to fundraise and raise awareness for the American Cancer Society throughout the year. On the day of the event, teams come together for 12 hours to celebrate survivors, remember those touched by cancer, and fight back against the disease through meaningful ceremonies and fun activities. It’s an extraordinary way to give back to my community and it’s something that I am incredibly proud to be a part of.
Although Langley and McLean are arch rivals in sports and academics, together we have
been working to create a fun and meaningful night. This is our fifth year organizing our own event and we would like to continue the success of our past events. Last year we raised $124,000 and this year our goal is to raise $151,475. We are also the 9th largest Relay for Life event in the South Atlantic Division (including colleges)!
I personally participate in this event for my Aunt in California who is not only a Breast
Cancer Survivor, but is currently fighting against Colon Cancer. Being halfway across the country from her is hard to bear, especially while she is fighting for her life. However, participating in this event helps her know that even though I am over two-thousand miles away, I will always be there for her.
If you would like to support our fight against cancer, please kindly visit our website:
Click on the Donate button! Please note that everyone is
welcome to the event, more details are on the website. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Thank you! Together, we WILL finish the fight!
A Counselor from McLean HS was invited to the Principal's Get Together on November 30th, where they shared ways we can help to foster self advocacy and resilience in our children. Here are a couple of PDF documents with some tips.
The Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library (off of Route 7, down from Trader Joe’s and across from Marshall High) was closed for renovation in January 2016. The renovation is expected to last at least 18 months. A temporary Tysons-Pimmet Regional Library is now open. It is located at:
7700 Leesburg Pike, Suite 134, Falls Church, VA 22043-2099
Mon - Fri: 10am - 6pm and Sat: 9am - 1pm
The temporary library is small but has a collection of approximately 5,000 books, magazines, newspapers, and media. Seating is limited. The Dolley Madison Library in McLean (off of Route 123) will have extended hours and increased numbers of books during the anticipated 18-month renovation. We hope all parents can take their children regularly to the Public Library to benefit from resources there!
For more information about the renovation and the temporary Tysons-Pimmet Regional Library, please visit: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches/ty/
If you live along Westmoreland St. between Haycock St. and Kirby Rd. and walk your kids to school (or your kids walk themselves), you may be interested in requesting a crosswalk across Westmoreland Street in that area from Fairfax County. Requests for a crosswalk can be submitted through contact FCDOT online form. The more applications will the County get, the faster we will get the crosswalk that will allow a safer commute for our children!
